Meet Winter Head-On With These Natural Hair Care Tips

Autumn is here, and winter is coming, but that doesn’t mean you have to endure dry, brittle, frizzy hair until spring. The right strategy and healthful, natural hair care ingredients will help you maintain your bouncy, shiny locks all winter.

First, let’s discuss your winter hair care routine. Then we’ll discuss the products that we recommend for best results.

Keep your hair beautiful and healthy all winter with these tips.

1. Hydrate your hair.

Hydration is the primary key to healthy and gorgeous hair during the winter.  Moisturize, moisturize, and moisturize some more.

Hydration will tame your flyaways and restore your hair’s healthy shine, and it will help your hair resist damage, brittleness, and breakage. This keeps your hair looking its best regardless of the season.

2. Use specialized products.

Look for shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, treatments, and oils specifically designed to help soothe your itchy, dry scalp, eliminate flakes, prevent breakage, and nourish your follicles.

We’ll recommend specific natural ingredients that we love so you can look for them in the products you choose.

3. Wash your hair less frequently.

During the winter, you can probably wash your hair less than you do during the warmer months. That’s because you probably won’t be sweating as much or accidentally spraying sunscreen above your hairline.

Washing your hair less allows it to utilize the skin’s oils to protect it from winter damage.

4. Add natural oils.

Smooth pure, natural oils into your ends to prevent breakage, comb through the lengths to add shine, and massage into your scalp to relieve dry, itchy skin.

If your hair is naturally oily, you might be tempted to skip this step, but we don’t recommend it. Simply focus your oil application on the ends of your hair and away from your roots to avoid unwanted greasiness.

5. Cover your tresses.

Don’t underestimate the power of hats and scarves during the winter. Even thin layers of natural fibers help to keep warmth and moisture against your scalp and hair, which can shield your locks from cold winds and freezing temperatures.

This step is extra important if you’re in a hurry and step out into the freezing cold with damp hair. A hat or a stylish scarf will keep your hair from freezing solid.

6. Trim split ends.

We also hate to sacrifice length. But sometimes, an extra trim can go a long way toward taming frizzy ends and keeping your hair smooth and tangle-free.

The less you have to tear your brush through knots and frizz, the less damage you’ll do to your hair.

7. Rinse your hair with cold water.

When you’re covered in goosebumps and trying not to run your heater 24/7, the last thing you may want to do is add a cold water rinse at the end of your shower. However, toughing it out for just a few seconds can make a big difference in your hair’s health and appearance.

Cold water helps to smooth down your hair cuticles that may otherwise be open because of warm water and your shampoo routine. Locking those cuticles down with a cold rinse will give your hair shine, reduce frizz, and add extra strength and protection.

Here are some natural ingredients we love for winter hair care.

Now that you know you need to moisturize, add oils, and use products that will help you fight your worst winter hair woes, which products should you actually purchase?

If you’re browsing the shelves—or clicking around online—look for products that include these powerhouse ingredients for best results.

1. Castor Oil

Castor oil is known for its moisturizing, hair-growth-boosting properties, which is why it’s included in many growth serums and conditioning products, such as our Nettles Leave-In Conditioner

If you’re experiencing winter breakage and it seems as if your hair hardly grows when it’s cold, using castor oil may be beneficial. You should be aware that some people counterintuitively find castor oil drying, so test it out to ensure this ingredient leaves your hair and scalp feeling happy and healthy before you invest in a larger quantity of it.

2. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a wonderful natural hair care product. You can use it as a deep conditioner, a pre-wash, a treatment for dry ends, and a scalp massage oil.

Coconut oil will help your hair lock in moisture, while its natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties help to combat dandruff and itching.

3. Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil most closely mimics the natural oil your scalp produces to protect your hair. This makes it an excellent choice if you want to add moisture and shine to your locks without heavy, greasy oils that can weigh hair down.

If you have really fine hair, use jojoba oil before you try other products; you may find your perfect solution right away. All of our shampoos include jojoba oil.

4. Rosehip Oil

Rosehip oil has properties that can help your hair and skin cells regenerate with regular use. This makes rosehip oil a great choice for people experiencing hair loss and scalp problems.

We created Botanical Oil #5 with intensive hair recovery in mind, so this could be a great option if you have damaged, overly processed, or severely dry hair and you want to give rosehip oil—among many other fantastic ingredients—a try.

5. Chamomile Essential Oil

Blondes, rejoice: Chamomile essential oil lets you preserve your highlights and keep your tone bright and lustrous without resorting to damaging bleach treatments during the winter. Our chamomile shampoo can naturally lighten hair with regular use, and it does so while adding moisture instead of stripping it away! You’ll also be pleasantly surprised at the effect our chamomile conditioner has on your split ends.

6. Clove Bud Essential Oil

We love clove bud essential oil because it strengthens hair, helps to prevent breakage and frizz, and smells great too.

You can try it in our Coffee and Cloves Leave-In Conditioner, which is great for adding color and dimension to darker hair colors while enhancing strength and shine. Just as chamomile can help lighter-haired ladies go longer between bleach treatments, our Coffee and Cloves conditioner is an excellent option for those of you who want to maintain your dark, rich color without overdoing damaging hair dyes.

Regardless of your hair color, length, density, or moisture level, we hope you’ve gotten some useful advice that will help you love your hair all winter long.
